Member of Parliament, Date of Birth: 10 January 1949. Mr Dervis holds a Degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a PhD in Economics from Princeton University, USA. Following his studies, Mr Dervis lectured at the Department of Economics of the Middle Eastern Technical University. Between 1973-1976, he served Bulent Ecevit as an advisor on issues relating to the economy and international relations, during and after Mr Ecevit's premiership. He then returned to Princeton University as a lecturer in economics and international relations. |
In 1978, he took office at the Research Department of the World Bank. In 1982, he was appointed Head of Industrial Strategy and Policy of the Global Industry Department. In 1986, he became Senior Economist of Europe, Middle East and Northern Africa Regions. In 1987, he was promoted Head of the Central Europe Division. In 1996, he became a Vice-President of the World Bank in charge of Middle East and Africa Region. In May 2000, he was appointed Vice-President responsible for Poverty Reduction and Economic Management. Mr Dervis resigned from the World Bank in March 2001 to take up the position of Finance Minister of Turkey, which he occupied until 2002. economics. He is co-author of "General Equilibrium Models for Development
