GERMAN MARSHALL FUND OF THE US The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) is an American public policy institution founded in 1972 through a gift from Germany in honor of post-war Marshall Plan assistance. GMF's mission is to promote the exchange of ideas and foster cooperative action between the United States and Europe in the spirit of the Marshall Plan. GMF does this through grants and fellowships for comparative international and domestic study and research; support of key institutions working on transatlantic issues, convening transatlantic leaders from all fields for open discussion and debate, and information sharing that strengthens broad understanding of transatlantic issues and perspectives. One of GMF's keystone projects in the CEE region is the Balkan Trust for Democracy project (BTD). BTD, founded in 2003, is a public-private partnership between GMF, the United States Agency for International Development, and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, to support good governance, democratic institution building and regional cooperation in the Balkans. |
